WELCOME TO THE ARHOOLIE FOUNDATION
A nonprofit organization rooted in the life's work of its founder Chris Strachwitz and his acclaimed independent label Arhoolie Records. Our mission is to help keep blues, Cajun, zydeco, gospel, jazz, Tejano/Norteño, old-time, and other tradition-based styles of music alive and well through archival preservation, live performance, community and educational outreach, exhibits, public programming, and direct support to artists.
The Strachwitz Frontera Collection is a colloboration between The Arhoolie Foundation, the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, and the UCLA Library that has digitized over 135,000 recordings of Mexican American and Mexican music from 78s, 45s, cassettes, LPs, and reel to reel tapes with associated record labels, album graphics, and notes. The collection is available and online where you can search and listen to recordings, read blogs, comment, and add your knowledge.
If you're traveling through the San Francisco International Airport anytime soon, make sure to check out SFO Museum's new exhibit Down-Home Music: The Story of Arhoolie Records
This exhibit tells the story of Chris Strachwitz and Arhoolie Records, and features musical instruments, album covers, photographs, posters, the original Magnecord reel-to-reel tape recorder Strachwitz used for most of his recordings between 1962-1972, and other artifacts.
On October 13, the Arhoolie Foundation held its first Annual benefit concert at the beautiful UC Theatre in Berkeley, CA. 'Bridging the Blues,' as we called the evening, featured two outstanding sets of music from the legendary Taj Mahal and rising star Fantastic Negrito. Photos by official photographer Ariel Nava.
Also on stage that night, we presented the first ever Arhoolie Awards (aka, Hoolies) to a phenomenal group of individuals and organizations dedicated to helping keep tradition-based music alive and well.
Dive deeper into our work at the archived arhoolie.org website. There you’ll find photo libraries, recorded interviews, poster galleries, and other treasures from the Arhoolie Foundation vault.
The Foundation gratefully accepts gifts, donations and grants from individuals, business firms and other foundations to help us expand our activities.
